The History of the Grapefruit Diet

The first version of the grapefruit diet appeared in the late 1920s when those in the know advised eating a whole grapefruit with each meal for 18 days, alongside other low-carb, high-protein foods like eggs and meat. The early diet was more restrictive than dieticians typically advise, depleting dieters’ nutrient intake. The grapefruit diet became particularly popular in Hollywood, where it gained its second name: the Hollywood diet.

The Hollywood diet wasn’t without its critics, and it fell out of popularity for a time before picking back up in the 1970s. In the 70s, there were unusually high yields of grapefruit in the U.S., leading to the return of the grapefruit diet. The diet’s popularity surged again in the 80s when it was called the 10-day, 10-pounds-off diet.

Grapefruit and Weight Loss: The Real Story

First of all, it’s important to note that not all grapefruit diet recommendations are healthy or advisable. Before making any significant changes to your diet, you should talk to your doctor.

But, when it comes to grapefruit and weight loss, is there any truth to the claims? It turns out, yes! Eating grapefruit helps support your body’s ability to regulate two things: your insulin levels and fat metabolism. When your insulin levels rise, your body slows down on burning fat and starts instead storing incoming energy as fat on the body. When you eat a grapefruit, it helps keep your insulin levels low, helping keep your fat metabolism higher.

The same study that revealed grapefruit’s relationship with insulin also showed that eating grapefruit can help you lose weight!
