5 Grapefruit Cocktails to Kick Up Your Labor Day
Labor Day is here, and it’s time to unwind, sit back, relax, and perhaps take a trip to the beach while keeping social distancing in mind.
While it has been a long summer, it is safe to say that we deserve a few grapefruit-infused drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) to cool off our carne asadas down from the Rio Grande Valley heat.
With this being said, we here Winter Sweetz want to fill you in on 5 of our delicious red grapefruit cocktail recipes to help make your well-deserved labor day weekend extra sweet!
1.The Valley’s Rio Red Grapefruit Paloma
This drink is sour, but sweet, with a balanced and unique flavor to it. While it is a fairly easy drink to make, you can never go wrong with this classic grapefruit cocktail!
Grab these:
- 2 ounces of blanco tequila of your personal choice
- 2 ounces of fresh grapefruit juice
- 2 ounces of sparkling water
- ½ ounce of lime juice
- ¼ ounce of agave nectar
- Sea salt for the rim
- Chamoy rim drip paste
- Ice
Then do this:
- Dip the rim of the glass into the chamoy paste, rub the edges of the glass in it, and then dip it into a separate plate full of sea salt.
- Mix the remaining ingredients together (tequila, grapefruit juice, sparkling water, agave nectar) into a cocktail shaker for about 15 seconds or until well chilled.
- Fill the glass with ice, pour the drink, and serve.
Preparation Time: 5 minutes

2.Sweet Red Grapefruit Rosé Sangria
What better way is there to wind down this Labor Day Weekend than to actually WINE down? This grapefruit-inspired minty rosé drink is perfect for a weekend getaway from work, helping you cool down wherever you may be!
You’ll want to gather these:
- 15 fresh mint leaves
- ¼ cup of simple syrup
- 1 cup of fresh grapefruit juice, preferably some Texas red grapefruits such as Winter Sweetz (when available)
- ½ of a whole grapefruit, peeled, and cut into desired chunks
- 1 cup of rosé
- 1 bottle of cava sparkling wine (chilled)
Then start:
- With a pitcher in hand, lay the mint leaves into the bottom and combine them with the simple syrup. Once done, add the grapefruit chunks, and pour in the grapefruit juice and rosé together.
- Refrigerate the pitcher for at least 4 hours or leave overnight.
- Once refrigerated, gently stir in the bottle of cava, and serve over ice.
Preparation Time: 10 minutes – 4 hours

3.Texas Sunset Lover
This take on a sunset offers a classic taste with a citrus twist. It’s perfect to complement any post-backyard carne asada or a good book as the sun is going down.
The ingredients you need:
- 2 ounces of desired vodka
- 4 ounces of fresh Texas red grapefruit juice
- ¼ ounces of grenadine
- A squeeze of lemon-lime juice
- Grapefruit and umbrella garnish
What you’ll want to do:
- Add a dash of grenadine to a highball glass.
- Mix the vodka and fresh grapefruit juice into an iced cocktail shaker.
- Shake for 15 seconds or until well chilled, then pour over ice into the highball glass.
- Garnish with a grapefruit slice and an umbrella.

4.Red Grapefruit Virgin Mojito
While it only makes sense to acknowledge that Labor Day Weekend involves a few adult beverages, this may not always be the case for everyone. Some of us may want to enjoy a drink with loved ones who can’t drink alcohol, so this yummy and refreshing take of a mojito is safe to drink for anyone!
First get these:
- ½ cup sparkling water or club soda
- ¼ cup fresh grapefruit juice
- 1 teaspoon raw cane sugar juice
- 4 mint leaves
- 2 slices lime
- 2 large ice cubes
Now do this:
- Mix in the raw cane sugar juice, mint leaves, and the slice of lime into the bottom of your desired glass with a spoon until everything is incorporated.
- Add in the grapefruit juice, and stir gently.
- Pour in the sparkling water or club soda and slide in your ice cubes.
- Garnish with the two remaining mint leaves and a slice of lime.

5.Grapefruit Ginger Mocktail
Last, but most certainly not least, is this virgin version of a cocktail that meshes the refreshing taste of sweet red grapefruit and the spice of ginger together into a chilled sparkling drink!
The Ingredients:
- 1 ounce of fresh Texas red grapefruit juice
- 2 ounces of non-alcoholic ginger ale or ginger beer
- The desired amount of ice cubes
- Cranberries and mint leaves for garnish
Prepare this:
- Fill your glass with the desired amount of ice cubes, and pour in 1/3rd of a glass’ worth of grapefruit juice.
- Fill the remaining amount of glass with ginger ale or ginger beer.
- Complete your drink by adding cranberries and mint leaves on top for garnishing.
