Simple Ways to Enjoy Your Grapefruit This Summer
The best thing about summer is the chance it gives us to explore and try new things.
As kids, it might be something as grand as finally getting the courage to reach the top of the tree in our backyard. And then following that up with a daredevil leap from a questionable height.
As we get older, those risks tend to be a little less adventurous, and a little more about enjoying some creativity and unexpected twists on old favorites.
At Winter Sweetz™ , we know that summer is not the season we typically celebrate grapefruit. But the refreshing and invigorating taste of grapefruit fits all seasons and goes well with summer’s ability to both help us relax and fill us with a sense of excitement.
With that in mind, sometimes you have to approach eating grapefruit with more than just a spoon. Try these recipes for new takes on enjoying the fruit and see if you can’t surprise those you share them with.
Cinnamon, Ginger, and Brown Sugar-Baked Rio Red Grapefruit
This recipe blends a lot of contrasting flavors into one easy-to-make treat that takes little time to prepare – only 3 minutes to prep and 3 minutes to cook. The sweetness of the brown sugar, and strong complements of cinnamon and ginger, all soak right into the richness of the grapefruit.
Ingredients you will need:
¼ cup of brown sugar
¼ teaspoon of ground ginger
¼ teaspoon of ground cinnamon
2 Winter Sweetz™ grapefruits cut in half and segmented
Serves: 4
Instructions: Preheat your oven to the broiler setting and move an oven rack 4 inches below your broiler. Mix everything but the grapefruits in a bowl. Cover each half of grapefruit evenly on top with your mixture. Broil for 3 minutes or until halves turn golden brown. Head back to the pool or couch and enjoy.
Grilled Texas Red Grapefruit
One sign of summer that can be seen and smelled almost every evening is BBQ. Whether you are a brisket, fajita, or chicken person, there is almost no end to what meat you can put on an open grill and enjoy with your friends and family.
Dedicated grillmasters have long-known that fruits and vegetables taste just as delicious as any other BBQ after resting above the fire. Don’t overlook your Rio Red grapefruits this summer when barbecuing.
What to bring: As many Winter Sweetz™ grapefruits as you want or need, your favorite sweeteners, and spices.
Serves: Depends on number of guests and grapefruits (2 per grapefruit).
Instructions: Cut each grapefruit in half and add your special rub to the flesh (feel free to try out different combos to find what you like best). Grill each side for about 2 minutes.
As simple to make as it is pleasing to your taste buds, these grapefruits will definitely shake up your normal BBQ menu. Whether you make them as a dessert or just as a snack, they are perfect for any relaxing summer occasion.
College Style Grapefruit Beer
Something that is part of most BBQs is sharing a cold refreshing brew with those you care most about. With the rise of craft beer in recent years, you can probably go out and find a beer with almost any flavor, including grapefruit.
The cost for these though, especially if you have a large number of guests, might be too high for everyone to enjoy a round or two.
But a simple solution is to go out and buy the inexpensive beer of choice for your group and make your own grapefruit beer. Altogether, this new drink should only take you 5 minutes to prepare.
What you need: Cheap beer (Keystone Light was the choice for the Dartmouth Students who happened upon this recipe), 1 grapefruit, 1 tsp agave nectar
Serves: 1
Instructions: Squeeze your grapefruit after slicing, removing any seeds and saving a slice as a garnish (if you choose). Add the agave and pour your beer into the mix. Mix together well and add juice or nectar to adjust the taste until it is just right for you. Serve your drink in a glass, covering the rim with salt or sugar, and add your grapefruit slice garnish.
Quick, easy, and different, this drink will be as much fun to make as it is to drink. As with the grilled grapefruit, you have plenty of room to be creative with the way the end product comes out. Let it reflect your own style and tastes.
The good folks at Winter Sweetz™ want to remind you to drink responsibly.
Everyone here at Winter Sweetz™ wishes you and your family an amazing summer vacation.
